Saluton, Amikoj!  [Sah-LOO-tohn, Ah-MEE-koy]  Hello, Friends! Yes. You, too, can fly in the magic wagon, ESPERANTO. You will find friends around the world, including children in your own country who, like you, have discovered that they can ask each other questions in Esperanto and have fun answering them. You do it with postcards, letters, drawings, E-Mail -- or in PERSON! In 100 countries Esperantists and Esperanto Clubs will welcome you and help you. We'll help you too, step by step.     1. Learn with Petro, to ask and answer the first four questions in this book. Here are examples of the questions. Kiu [KEE-oo] vi estas? Mi estas (your name.) Kio ĝi [jee] estas? Ĝi estas kato. Ĉu [Choo] la kato estas besto?   Jes [Yehs]. Ĝi estas besto. Ĉu ĝi estas blua? Ne. Ĝi ne estas blua. Ĝi estas nigra (black) Who are you? What is it? It is a cat. Is the cat an animal? No. It is not blue.     2. Let us know when you can ask and answer these questions. We'll send you a little English-Esperanto dictionary, and with our project MONDO-RONDO (WORLD-CIRCLE), we'll help you send picture post cards or drawings to other children, and write questions about the pictures.     3. Your first goal is to get in touch with other children. So, at first, respond to cards you receive, simply by sending another card with questions. At the same time, introduce Petro and his magic wagon to others, and help them ask and answer the questions.     4. When you can ask and answer the fifth question in this book, we'll help you ask and answer personal questions, and questions about your and the other child's city and country. (See page 8.) I.   Write to us when you can ask and answer the five questions in this book. We will help you correspond with children in your country and overseas. II.   When you know 50 words, and have helped someone ask and answer the questions at least ten minutes a week for a month, you will be eligible for membership as a STELETO (a little STAR) in LA MONDA STELARO (The World Group of STARS), an international Esperanto club for children, ages 6-17. Children who join the club agree to go on studying Esperanto and to introduce the language to others. We'll send you a certificate as a STELETO and an Esperanto comic book, and tell you how to earn other awards. III.   While asking and answering the questions, you have been speaking excellent Esperanto -- and have been learning the basic framework of the language and the following rules. There are no exceptions. For example, there are no irregular verbs. 1.   NOUNS end in -o.   (See page 9.)       Plural nouns end in -oj [pronounce oy, rhymes with boy] 2.   ADJECTIVES end in -a [pronounced ah]. Plural adjectives end in -aj [ahy: pronounced i, as in aisle]. When the noun is plural, the adjective is plural. 3.   The present tense of VERBS ends in -as [ahs]. The imperative of verbs ends in -u [oo].   Mi demandas.   Demandu! I ask, I am asking. Ask! Li flugas. Flugu! He flies, is flying. Fly! 4.   OTHER RULES 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) There is no word for a or an. Use ĉu [choo] to change a statement into a question. Put ne before a verb. Use the ending -n when a noun or pronoun is the direct object of a verb. Do not use the ending -n after the verb estas. Kato estas besto. Ĉu kato estas besto? Ĝi [jee] ne estas blua. Mi vidas lin. Li vidas min. Li legas libron. Li estas amiko. A cat is an animal. Is a cat an animal? It is not blue. I see him.
